These are African Rhythms… passed down to us from the ancient spirits… Originally released in 1975 on the Black Fire label, this piece of DC afro-funk is best-known for the breakbeat cut Liberation Dues. After all these years, it still can make your balls drop. I ve grown to really appreciate the a-side as well. It plays as one long continuous multi-movement track, starting with the 7+ minute African Rhythms (Dilla touched this one on the Welcome 2 Detroit LP), weaving through funk ( Kazi and Tarishi ), African music, and soul jazz ( Masharki ). 2018 double vinyl repress on Strut with the rare 45 version of African Rhythms and the previously-unreleased Afrobeat.
